Eu gostaria de saber se vai ter show da Vanessa aqui em Fortaleza no mês de dezembro??? Certo dia assisti uma entrevista com ela no Sem Censura e ela dizia que viria a Fortaleza no final do ano, inclusive divulgaram no show do Seu Jorge. Gostaria apenas de uma confirmação se vai ter mesmo ou não.

Brazilian Popular Music (MPB) superstar and former BLACK UHURU backing vocal VANESSA DA MATA released her 3rd record Sim ("Yes") half an year ago. It built a middle ground between her sonic heritages - a lightweight Reggae record with noticeable hints of MPB, targeting world audiences. Occasional burts of Folk (like BOB MARLEY would) and Samba (as any MPB star would) only reaffirm the twin foundation of her current sonority. Produced by indie enfant terrible Kassin and BEASTIE BOYS' Mario Caldato VANESSA sounds contrived in the first section; up the record's ladder she eases her vocal strenghts and Brazilianity; the closing section is even accomodated once she found her own voice amidst the new contex.
A Reggae number, Vermelho ("Red" which is also the name of BLACK UHURU's most renowned record) unveils her vocal abilities in reflective love mood. Backing vocals sound forced though; it's not really Jamaica. VANESSA sounds professional but somehow contrived by her current framework - less fresh, more conventional, less Brazilian. Not a triumph, just a pleasing album opener and a declaration of intent. (* * * *)
Fugiu com a Novela ("She Ran Away With the Soap Opera") is a more interesting percussive item, a percolating acoustic melody with wonderful fragile Bossa Nova vocals (though there's a definitive African element in her rich timbre). It displays the affiliations between the minimalistic bedrock of Bossa Nova and Reggae's poppier offerings. Lyrics deal with popular culture in an ironic vein, a MPB standard approach since Tropicalismo. It may explain the odd presence of a fuzz guitar more akin to OS MUTANTES amidst VANESSA's soft parade. Bau ("Treasure Chest") is another typical MPB number conveying the roots of Brazilian culture within a Pop (1970s) set. There's interesting Samba melody mixed with retro Moog organs and playful, yet, pointless lyrics. VANESSA's vocal display (in Portuguese) of fragility and uncertainty contrast with serene HARPER and his acquiescing naturality (in English). Gradually she becomes a backing vocal to the singer-songwriter whose Reggae affiliations are just one in a never-ending cornucopia of acoustic influences.
HARPER long ago gave up critics' expectations of a crossover to mainstream audiences, finding a comfortable niche for his feelgood sonority. There's a pleasing slide guitar melody that mirrors that acquired wisdom whereas VANESSA sounds earnest and focused on breaking through to the other side but niticeably unsettled, as there are "injust expectations" before the chorus arrives: "everything you want to give me/it's too heavy/it's unreal". Apart from the poignant chorus we may miss her previous buoyant performances but the autobiographic tone is striking. Good luck, VANESSA. (* * * *)
Amado ("Beloved") unfolds with a surprise sounding more like a KATE BUSH lullaby than a MPB superstar Reggae crossover. Then we know that her rich timbre is employed in a fairly conventional ballad - with dignity, for the matter, but fairly conventional and not more than that. When performers such as CEU are experimenting successfully and even a conventional BEBEL GILBERTO matures gracefully VANESSA sounds less then the sum of her current parts. A beautiful depiction of romantic intimacy (with a marvelous coda) - but VANESSA used to be more than this...(* * * *)
Pirraca ("Stubborness") is a playful Reggae number, once again with Moogs (which sound like a MANU CHAO throwback). This time VANESSA finds a Brazilian way to twist vocally around the beats, sometimes like CEU's Roda. The description of many Brazilian candies is really funny. She sounds loose and confortable once for all. Finally she transcends her current window-dressings and finds a new configuration of her own. The beginning of great things to come - again! (* * * * 1/2)
Voce Vai Me Destruir ("You Gonna Destroy Me") is a duet with Fernando Catatau - one of the most hyped new artists in Brazil, a guitarist and singer influenced by cheesy genres such as Jovem Guarda, "Brega" (Kitsch) and Musak. It is a cheesy kind of song indeed, which could have been a New Wave hit if only Brazilian New Wave included something akin to Reggae and MPB apart from digital strings and otherwordly effects. It sounds nicely out of times and the exagerated romantic issue sometimes is rendered through vocal twists worth of LUXURIA (?). That is, this record's oddball. VANESSA survives the test. (* * * *)
Absurdo ("Absurd") is VANESSA's version of accessible Dub. Jamaican legends SLY & ROBBIE produced this small gem (reminiscent of their own classic Hulet). It is a fine gathering of strenghts, the subtlety of her voice mirroring the deceptive subconscious effects of their fine craft. The environmental issue is decent enough to survive its concretist lyrics. (* * * * 1/2)
Quem Ira Nos Proteger ("Who Will Protect Us") unfortunately is not on par with its precedessors. VANESSA resorts to GAL COSTA-like mannerisms amidst a featherweight Reggae backdrop with occasional guitars and strings undesirable outburst. Reflective lyrics are somehow preachy and heavy-handed - they simply don't belong in such a set. An uneven composition that bears decent vocals, though. (* * * 1/2)
Ilegais ("Illegal Ones") sounds like VANESSA's entrance examination in NATIRUTS, Brazil's current most beloved Pop-Reggae band. Lyrics sound naive next to Roots Reggae greats and percussion itens are employed with a sharp ear towards markets not paens to Jah. In sum it's Lovers Rock. There's an interesting brass section (truly the standout here) and VANESSA reminds quite well her BLACK UHURU days - that it, it doesn't sound like opportunism. Apart from that we can find more satisficing Reggae numbers even in Brazil. (* * * 1/2)
Quanto Um Homem Tem Uma Mangueira No Quintal ("When A Man Has a Mango Tree In The Garden") bears an unusual title but it's even more unusual in its approach. It's a bare-bones frantic Samba number with exquisite vocalises from VANESSA (who sings in a high affected falsetto). As a poppier CLARA NUNES with all the (bodily, vocal) swing and exhuberance to convey such a number which also manages to include some Reggae acoustic licks. Numbers as this instant classic, with its accomplished alchemy, eloquently display VANESSA's prominence on Brazilian contemporary music. (* * * * *)
Meu Deus ("My God") next-to-last number is a digital humming meditation worth of 1970s MPB - besides Amado, the best display of maturity here (and counting on the venerable piano services of Bossa Nova forefather JOAO DONATO). Reggae and Bossa Nova once again fused become an adequate framework for her tender religious-romantic romp. Female romanticism is a sly, subtle matter and VANESSA more then exceeds after so many attempts. Traditional arrangements, for sure, but employing unusual raw material courtesy of SLY & ROBBIE. And lyrics once for all are not mere Tropicalist jigsaws. A future standard? (* * * * 1/2)
Claiming her place amidst the best records of 2007 VANESSA DA MATA unveils her performative, but humble, persona in Minha Heranca - Uma Flor ("My Heritage - A Flower") the coda to this fine Sim. Conjuring the acoustic foundations of MPB and Reggae, she finds a good excuse for displaying her warm voice almost a capella, backed only by a sad, detached acoustic melody. It's a meditative, sad coda to a love gone wrong and strikingly different from the well-known exhuberance of her previous love stataments. The girl who recently adopted LEGIAO URBANA's classic Vento no Litoral ("Coastal Wind") for her live sets plays confident and delicate. A fine small gem to this complex, successful crossover Sim. There's a pleasing slide guitar melody that mirrors that acquired wisdom whereas VANESSA sounds earnest and focused on breaking through to the other side but niticeably unsettled, as there are "injust expectations" before the chorus arrives: "everything you want to give me/it's too heavy/it's unreal". Apart from the poignant chorus we may miss her previous buoyant performances but the autobiographic tone is striking. Good luck, VANESSA. (* * * *)
Amado ("Beloved") unfolds with a surprise sounding more like a KATE BUSH lullaby than a MPB superstar Reggae crossover. Then we know that her rich timbre is employed in a fairly conventional ballad - with dignity, for the matter, but fairly conventional and not more than that. When performers such as CEU are experimenting successfully and even a conventional BEBEL GILBERTO matures gracefully VANESSA sounds less then the sum of her current parts. A beautiful depiction of romantic intimacy (with a marvelous coda) - but VANESSA used to be more than this...(* * * *)
Pirraca ("Stubborness") is a playful Reggae number, once again with Moogs (which sound like a MANU CHAO throwback). This time VANESSA finds a Brazilian way to twist vocally around the beats, sometimes like CEU's Roda. The description of many Brazilian candies is really funny. She sounds loose and confortable once for all. Finally she transcends her current window-dressings and finds a new configuration of her own. The beginning of great things to come - again! Voce Vai Me Destruir ("You Gonna Destroy Me") is a duet with Fernando Catatau - one of the most hyped new artists in Brazil, a guitarist and singer influenced by cheesy genres such as Jovem Guarda, "Brega" (Kitsch) and Musak. It is a cheesy kind of song indeed, which could have been a New Wave hit if only Brazilian New Wave included something akin to Reggae and MPB apart from digital strings and otherwordly effects. It sounds nicely out of times and the exagerated romantic issue sometimes is rendered through vocal twists worth of LUXURIA (?). That is, this record's oddball. VANESSA survives the test. (* * * *)
Absurdo ("Absurd") is VANESSA's version of accessible Dub. Jamaican legends SLY & ROBBIE produced this small gem (reminiscent of their own classic Hulet). It is a fine gathering of strenghts, the subtlety of her voice mirroring the deceptive subconscious effects of their fine craft. The environmental issue is decent enough to survive its concretist lyrics. (* * * * 1/2)
Quem Ira Nos Proteger ("Who Will Protect Us") unfortunately is not on par with its precedessors. VANESSA resorts to GAL COSTA-like mannerisms amidst a featherweight Reggae backdrop with occasional guitars and strings undesirable outburst. Reflective lyrics are somehow preachy and heavy-handed - they simply don't belong in such a set. An uneven composition that bears decent vocals, though. (* * * 1/2)
Ilegais ("Illegal Ones") sounds like VANESSA's entrance examination in NATIRUTS, Brazil's current most beloved Pop-Reggae band. Lyrics sound naive next to Roots Reggae greats and percussion itens are employed with a sharp ear towards markets not paens to Jah. In sum it's Lovers Rock. There's an interesting brass section (truly the standout here) and VANESSA reminds quite well her BLACK UHURU days - that it, it doesn't sound like opportunism. Apart from that we can find more satisficing Reggae numbers even in Brazil. (* * * 1/2)
Quanto Um Homem Tem Uma Mangueira No Quintal ("When A Man Has a Mango Tree In The Garden") bears an unusual title but it's even more unusual in its approach. It's a bare-bones frantic Samba number with exquisite vocalises from VANESSA (who sings in a high affected falsetto). As a poppier CLARA NUNES with all the (bodily, vocal) swing and exhuberance to convey such a number which also manages to include some Reggae acoustic licks. Numbers as this instant classic, with its accomplished alchemy, eloquently display VANESSA's prominence on Brazilian contemporary music. (* * * * *)
Meu Deus ("My God") next-to-last number is a digital humming meditation worth of 1970s MPB - besides Amado, the best display of maturity here (and counting on the venerable piano services of Bossa Nova forefather JOAO DONATO). Reggae and Bossa Nova once again fused become an adequate framework for her tender religious-romantic romp. Female romanticism is a sly, subtle matter and VANESSA more then exceeds after so many attempts. Traditional arrangements, for sure, but employing unusual raw material courtesy of SLY & ROBBIE. And lyrics once for all are not mere Tropicalist jigsaws. A future standard? (* * * * 1/2)
Claiming her place amidst the best records of 2007 VANESSA DA MATA unveils her performative, but humble, persona in Minha Heranca - Uma Flor ("My Heritage - A Flower") the coda to this fine Sim. Conjuring the acoustic foundations of MPB and Reggae, she finds a good excuse for displaying her warm voice almost a capella, backed only by a sad, detached acoustic melody. It's a meditative, sad coda to a love gone wrong and strikingly different from the well-known exhuberance of her previous love stataments. The girl who recently adopted LEGIAO URBANA's classic Vento no Litoral ("Coastal Wind") for her live sets plays confident and delicate. A fine small gem to this complex, successful crossover Sim. (* * * *). See ya!
